Sanders Announces Helena-West Helena as Arkansas’ Capital for a Day on September 3
TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS COME – GREETINGS:
WHEREAS: West Helena, established by business leaders to accommodate the influx of people relocating to the area upon the completion of the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad, was incorporated in 1917;
WHEREAS: During the Civil War, Helena became an important post for the Union Army, and in World War II, the U.S. Military started a flight school in town and established the Thompson-Robbins Airfield, which today operates as Thompson-Robbins Airport;
WHEREAS: Ken Hatfield, a former University of Arkansas football coach, was born in Helena and became a star player on the University’s 1964 national championship football team;
WHEREAS: Former Senator Blanche Meyers Lambert Lincoln, the youngest woman elected to the United States Senate, was born and raised in Helena;
WHEREAS: Today, Helena-West Helena is home to many sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Coolidge House, Phillips County Courthouse, Spirit of the American Doughboy Monument, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church;
WHEREAS: Visitors and residents can visit the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival, which began in 1986, and today brings over 100,000 people to town each year;
WHEREAS: Governor Sanders’ “Capital for a Day” program highlights great cities around Arkansas like Helena-West Helena and brings senior state government officials into town to meet with their local counterparts; and
WHEREAS: Helena-West Helena will serve as the twenty-second “Capital for a Day” under Governor Sanders and will momentarily serve as Arkansas’ seat of government.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby name Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, our Capital for a Day on September 3, 2026, and invite our senior state government officials to join me in a visit to the city.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Arkansas to be affixed this 1st day of September, in the year of our Lord 2026.
