Sanders Announces Springdale as Arkansas’ Capital for a Day on October 8
TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS COME – GREETINGS:
WHEREAS: The town was originally named Shiloh after the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church, built in 1843;
WHEREAS: During the Civil War, much of Shiloh was destroyed, leading many families to flee to the surrounding areas until 1868, when the man credited with founding the town, John Holcombe, returned to rebuild the town and church;
WHEREAS: In 1872, while petitioning for a post office, town leaders discovered that a Shiloh, Arkansas, was already in existence, leading a woman named Sarah Reed Meek, the wife of a prominent town leader, to suggest naming the town Springdale, after “springs in the dale”;
WHEREAS: By 1940, Springdale’s thriving poultry-processing business led to the USDA naming Arkansas as the nation’s largest producer of chickens;
WHEREAS: Today, Springdale is home to dozens of manufacturing and poultry-processing plants, as well as related companies in the transportation and logistics industry;
WHEREAS: Visitors and residents of Springdale are offered a variety of experiences, including rides along the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad, history lessons at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, world-class mountain biking and rock climbing on Fitzgerald Mountain, and show-stopping competition at the annual Rodeo of the Ozarks;
WHEREAS: Governor Sanders’ “Capital for a Day” program highlights great cities around Arkansas like Springdale and brings senior state government officials into town to meet with their local counterparts; and
WHEREAS: Springdale will serve as the twenty-fifth “Capital for a Day” under Governor Sanders and will momentarily serve as Arkansas’ seat of government.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby name Springdale, Arkansas, our Capital for a Day on October 8, 2026, and invite our senior state government officials to join me in a visit to the city.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Arkansas to be affixed this 5th day of October, in the year of our Lord 2026.
